008... Thanks to residents Nancy Caviness and Donna
Black, Duck has become a Thanksgiving destination for
hundreds of out of state runners. For the 12th year, the
two have staged the annual Advice 5K, a low-key
down-home footrace where the male and female winners
receive a baked pie. For the 550 participants who ran
this year, there were dozens of prizes, food and drink
donated by local businesses. Above, Joe Hiller, 17, of
Lewisburg, won the race and earned an appetite for
turkey dinner. (Bobbie Beckley photo) |
018... Passing the torch. Turkeys have one day in the
sun before getting the ax. Santa takes over the holiday
reins for the next month, bringing joy to girls and
boys. Above, turkey girl Marjorie White of Aydlett gives
Santa a little smooch with only one gift on her wish
list... to survive the dinner table one more year. Both
shared the stage at the 12th Annual Advice 5K Turkey
Trot in Duck on Thanksgiving Day. Santa granted the wish
and Marjorie will be back next year. (Ed Beckley) |
035... Duck Fire Chief Donna Black, who stages the
annual Advice 5K Turkey Trot with Nancy Caviness,
announces one of dozens of prize winners from the 550
participants who partied in the Scarborough Faire
parking lot post-race on Thanksgiving morning. (Ed

024... To the winner goes the pie. Advice 5K winner Joe
Hiller accepts his footrace-winning pie from Race
Director Nancy Caviness. Hiller ran a smoking 15:30 in
the 2.99-mile race. A 5K is traditionally 3.1 miles, but
Caviness wishes all a Happy Thanksgiving by officially
cutting off a couple hundred yards. (Ed Beckley) |
016... They came as Hula Girls in 2006, but felt it more
appropriate to don gobbler apparel for the 2007 Advice
5K Turkey Trot in Duck on Thanksgiving Day. Left is
Marjorie White of Aydlett and Karsyn Wass of Gloucester,
VA. (Ed Beckley) |
037... With the beautiful sound in the background,
hundreds of runners rallied in the Scarborough Faire
parking lot in Duck Thanksgiving morning, munching on
bagels and cookies, water and brew, after enduring the
5K footrace that made them feel worthy to eat and drink
all day long. (Ed Beckley) |
